FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra Receives $350,000 Grant from NV Energy Foundation to Support SAFE Program

Reno, NV, July 17, 2024 – United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) is proud to announce it has been awarded $350,000 from the NV Energy Foundation. This substantial grant will benefit the Special Assistance Fund for Emergencies (SAFE) program, providing essential utility assistance to individuals and families facing financial hardships in Northern Nevada, predominately during the winter months.

“The NV Energy Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of our community by supporting initiatives like SAFE, which provides vital assistance to those in need,” said Ryan Bellows, Vice President, Government and External Relations of NV Energy. “We are proud to partner with UWNNS to help families and individuals across Northern Nevada.”

The SAFE program, now managed by UWNNS, offers a one-time payment to help cover utility bills up to $250, ensuring that vulnerable community members maintain access to essential services. This program fills a crucial gap by supplementing state and federal low-income energy assistance programs. UWNNS will administer the SAFE program, ensuring continued support for those in need. The grant will enable UWNNS to assist more individuals and strengthen the community safety net.

The Special Assistance Fund for Energy (SAFE) program provides emergency utility assistance to individuals and families in Northern Nevada, primarily during the harsh winter months when utility bills can become unmanageable. The program offers a one-time payment to help cover overdue utility bills, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted. Previously administered by NV Energy, the SAFE program is now managed by UWNNS, who will oversee the verification of eligibility and distribution of funds. By filling the gap left by state and federal assistance programs, SAFE aims to prevent power disconnections and support those facing financial hardships.

“We are incredibly grateful to the NV Energy Foundation for their generous support,” said Blake Pang, CEO of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra. “Their commitment to our community is invaluable, and with their help, we can continue to provide critical assistance to those facing economic challenges.”
