Reno, NV (June 14, 2024) – United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities in Northern Nevada, announced it was presented with a $40,000 grant from the U.S. Bank Foundation. The funds will be used to support UWNNS and its programming, which focuses on uniting communities to improve lives through focused programming around early literacy and improving access to basic needs.

“Thanks to the support of the U.S. Bank Foundation, we are able to continue our mission of creating lasting change in Northern Nevada. This grant empowers us to continue our vital work in early literacy and educational access, helping children and families achieve their full potential,” said Blake Pang, president and CEO of UWNNS.

UWNNS is dedicated to improving early literacy as well as providing the resources and tools needed to help stabilize families. Currently, less than 50% of children in Northern Nevada are reading at grade level at the end of third grade. This critical educational milestone is one of the first predictors of high school graduation and future economic mobility. UWNNS addresses early literacy through internal programming and community partnerships, focusing on children ages 0-8.

“Supporting the development of northern Nevada’s youth and early childhood education is an investment in today and our future. U.S. Bank is honored to support UWNNS, which works tirelessly to make education accessible for all,” said Arturo Pérez, community affairs manager at U.S. Bank. “Helping more children improve literacy in the early years makes our community stronger.”

U.S. Bank is committed to powering human potential and creating lasting change in communities. The bank does this through the Community Possible platform, including philanthropy, community investments, and team member volunteerism.
