NVV: When and where did you serve and what was your role within the AmeriCorps program?
Sachs: I have been an AmeriCorps member serving with United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UNWNNS) since February 2023.
Each weekday, I conduct half-hour sessions of Haggerty Phonemic Awareness for students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
NVV: Why did you choose to join AmeriCorps?
Sachs: I was frustrated with my job in retail and found it unrewarding. Working in retail can be incredibly demanding, often requiring long hours, constant interaction with customers, and dealing with various challenges daily. Despite my hard work and dedication, it sometimes felt like my efforts went unappreciated, leading to a sense of frustration. The repetitive nature of the tasks, coupled with limited opportunities for growth or recognition, made the job feel unfulfilling and monotonous.
Additionally, the high-pressure environment and the need to meet sales targets or handle difficult customers added to the stress, making it hard to find satisfaction and reward in my work. This combination of factors left me feeling undervalued and disheartened, prompting me to seek more meaningful and rewarding opportunities elsewhere.
NVV: What has been the most memorable thing to happen during your service?
Sachs: Last year, I was honored to be nominated by the Office of Governor Joe Lombardo, in collaboration with Nevada Volunteers, as a nominee for the 2024 Stars of Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Awards in the category of National Service Member. This prestigious recognition celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service.
I was delighted to receive a certificate of appreciation in the mail, acknowledging my efforts and dedication. It is truly gratifying to receive such recognition for my commitment to community service and to know that my contributions have made a positive impact.
NVV: What should others know about serving with AmeriCorps?
Sachs: Participating in AmeriCorps is an exceptionally rewarding service experience that offers individuals the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Through this program, members engage in a variety of initiatives that address critical needs, such as education, public health, environmental conservation, and disaster response.
The hands-on experience not only fosters personal growth and skill development but also instills a profound sense of civic responsibility and commitment to public service.
By working alongside dedicated individuals who share a common goal of improving lives and strengthening communities, AmeriCorps members gain invaluable insights and forge lasting connections.
