History

In 1942, local community leaders and volunteers came together with one desire ... to make northern Nevada a better place to live.  For 75 years, United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra has brought citizens from all walks of life together to solve the most pressing challenges that our northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe Basin communities have faced. Today, we deliver community impact that is both innovative and targeted.  We fund multi-agency partnerships that are changing the lives of children and their families. As we celebrate our 75th year in business, we celebrate each of you, your efforts to date, and your efforts to come -- as we advance towards a great future together.

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation (incorporated in Nevada, July 6, 1961). The organization started as the Reno-Sparks Community Chest in 1942. In 1969, the Community Chest changed its name to Washoe United Fund, and in 1987, to United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS).
