History

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation (incorporated in Nevada, July 6, 1961). The organization started as the Reno-Sparks Community Chest in 1942. In 1969, the Community Chest changed its name to Washoe United Fund, and in 1987, to United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS).


UWNNS is a member in good standing of United Way Worldwide (UWW).  UWW is a network in 45 countries and territories, including 1,200 local organizations in the U.S.
